A Hindu festival (parva or utsava) is a day set aside to mark a season, a sacred story, or the presence of a deity — timed to the lunar tithi, a solar transit (Sankranti), or a fixed date on the regional calendar. Celebrating together renews family and community bonds, gives thanks for the harvest or the turning of the year, and retells the stories — like Rama's return to Ayodhya on Diwali, or Durga's victory over evil at Navratri — that carry each community's values forward.
Because India follows several regional calendars, the same lunar month can fall across two Gregorian months — which is why you'll see festivals grouped by Hindu month (Chaitra, Vaishakha and so on) as well as by the familiar Gregorian calendar throughout this site.
