About Chaitra Navratri Begins

Chaitra Navratri opens nine days of worship to the nine forms of Goddess Durga and also marks the start of the Hindu lunar new year in many regions.

Homes install a Ghatasthapana kalash on day one, kept lit through the nine-day observance.

Significance

Nine nights honouring the nine forms of Goddess Durga, marking the Hindu lunar new year in the Chaitra month. It culminates on Ram Navami, the ninth day.

How to Observe

Set up a Kalash (sacred pot) and sow barley seeds (Ghatasthapana) on day one
Observe a fast for all or some of the nine days
Perform daily puja to a different form of Durga each day
Conclude with Kanya Puja, honouring young girls as living forms of the Goddess

Regional Variations

Northern India

Widely observed as a fasting period leading up to Ram Navami.

Maharashtra

The first day coincides with Gudi Padwa, the regional new year.

Notes: Date and timings shown are computed for New Delhi, India using Swiss Ephemeris. Computed via the Udaya Tithi (tithi prevailing at sunrise) convention and the purnimanta month naming both already used by /api/panchang and vrat_engine.py's Janmashtami/Shraddha types. A tithi that never touches a sunrise (Kshaya) falls back to a midday-anchor scan instead of returning no date — see module docstring's Kshaya Tithi finding; one spanning two sunrises (Vriddhi) can still produce two consecutive dates, unresolved beyond the plain rule. Confirmed Mar 19, 2026 against 7+ sources — this is the Kshaya Tithi case from the module docstring; the midday-anchor fallback is what actually resolves it, since Pratipada never touches a 2026 Ahmedabad sunrise. Always cross-check with your family priest for a personalised Muhurat.

Why does this festival's date change every year on the Gregorian calendar?

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
