Holika Dahan is the bonfire lit on the eve of Holi, symbolising the burning away of the demoness Holika and the triumph of devotion over arrogance.
Families gather around the fire, offering grains and coconut for prosperity.
The bonfire lit on the evening of Phalguna Purnima, the night before Holi. It recalls the story of Prahlad, a devotee of Vishnu, who was saved when his aunt Holika — who was believed to be immune to fire — burned in the pyre instead. It is a festival of good defeating evil, and is timed to Pradosh (the hours after sunset) and to avoid the inauspicious Bhadra period.
West Bengal & Odisha
The full-moon day is Dol Purnima / Dol Jatra, centred on Radha-Krishna images swung on decorated palanquins; Shantiniketan holds the Basanta Utsav spring festival.
Kerala
Known as Ukuli or Manjal Kuli, observed mainly by the Konkani and Kudumbi communities with temple rituals and turmeric water rather than coloured powder.
Goa & Maharashtra
Celebrated as Shigmo (Goa) and Shimga (Maharashtra), with folk-dance parades and a Rang Panchami colour day.
Kumaon (Uttarakhand)
Marked by Baithaki and Khadi Holi — sung, music-centred gatherings before the colour play.

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
