Labh Pancham falls on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight of Kartik, a few days after Diwali. In Gujarat it is the first working day of the Gujarati New Year, when shops and businesses reopen.
Traders traditionally inaugurate new account books (khatu) on this day, writing Shubh on the left, Labh on the right and drawing a swastika in the middle of the first page. It is also known as Saubhagya Panchami and Gyan Panchami, and is considered favourable for starting new ventures.
Labh means profit or gain. The day is associated with starting the business year with an auspicious first entry and prayers to Ganesha and Lakshmi for prosperity and good fortune.
Gujarat
The main region of observance, as the first working day of the Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas).
Other regions
Known as Saubhagya Panchami or Gyan Panchami; observance is quieter.
Labh Pancham 2026 mein Saturday, 14 November ko hai (New Delhi ke panchang ke anusaar). Tithi: Kartik, Shukla Paksha, Panchami. Yeh tithi 08:43 PM, Nov 13 se 11:24 PM, Nov 14 tak rehti hai. Apne shehar ke hisaab se samay thoda alag ho sakta hai.
Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
