Thaipusam commemorates the day Goddess Parvati gave Lord Murugan a vel (spear) to vanquish evil.
Devotees carry kavadi — ornate structures balanced on the shoulders — in a display of penance and devotion.
A Tamil festival for Lord Murugan, held on the full moon of the Tamil month of Thai when the Pusam (Pushya) star is prominent. It recalls the day Goddess Parvati gave Murugan the vel (divine spear) with which he defeated the demon Surapadman. Some traditions also call it Murugan's birthday, while others place that on Vaikasi Visakam, so the framing varies by source.
Tamil Nadu
A state holiday, marked at Murugan temples — many of them on hilltops, so the pilgrimage is often a climb.
Malaysia
Draws huge crowds to Batu Caves (a climb of 272 steps), preceded by a silver chariot procession from Kuala Lumpur; a public holiday in several states.
Singapore & Mauritius
Observed by the Tamil community with milk-pot and kavadi processions; a public holiday in Mauritius.

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
