Vat Purnima has married women tie sacred thread around a banyan tree, praying for their husband's long life, following the legend of Savitri and Satyavan.
The banyan's long life and wide canopy symbolise the endurance being prayed for.
Observed by married women to pray for the long life and wellbeing of their husbands, based on the story of Savitri, who persuaded Yama, the god of death, to return her husband Satyavan's life (told in the Mahabharata). The banyan (vat) tree, admired for its longevity and wide spread, is worshipped at the heart of the ritual. The same vrat is also called Vat Savitri.
Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa & Karnataka
By the Amanta calendar the vrat falls on Jyeshtha Purnima (full moon) — the day that gives this festival its name.
Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha & Nepal
By the Purnimanta calendar the same vrat is kept as Vat Savitri on Jyeshtha Amavasya (new moon), about 15 days earlier.
Some traditions
A three-day fast running from Trayodashi to Purnima is observed in some households.

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
