Vishu is Kerala's New Year, opened with the Vishukkani — the first sight of the day, an arrangement of grains, fruit, flowers and a mirror meant to set a prosperous tone.
Children receive Vishu Kaineettam, a small gift of money from elders.
The Malayali new year, on the first day of the month of Medam (mid-April), tied to the Sun's entry into Mesha. Its central idea is Vishukkani — 'the first thing seen' — from the belief that an auspicious first sight sets the tone for the whole year. It is closely associated with Lord Krishna, and Vishnu as the Lord of Time.
Kerala
Marked by all Malayali communities; temples hold a pre-dawn 'Vishukkani Kazhcha' viewing of the deity.
Tulu Nadu (Mangaluru & Udupi)
Celebrated as Bisu with similar customs.
Mahe
Also observed there as part of the Malayali cultural region.

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
