Winter Solstice

The winter solstice marks the shortest day and longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, when the Sun reaches its southernmost point (Dakshinayana ending). In Hindu tradition, Uttarayana is celebrated a few weeks later at Makar Sankranti (~January 14), when Surya is treated as entering Makara Rashi.
