Gudi Padwa and Ugadi mark the New Year for Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh respectively, believed to be the day Brahma began creation.
A gudi flag is raised outside homes in Maharashtra, while Ugadi Pachadi — a dish balancing six tastes — is prepared in the south.
The first day (Pratipada) of the bright half of Chaitra, the start of the lunar new year for much of the Deccan and western India. It is traditionally linked with the start of Brahma's creation, and the name Ugadi comes from 'Yugadi', the beginning of a new age. The gudi raised at Gudi Padwa is explained in different ways — as a flag of victory of King Shalivahana, or as Brahma's flag.
Maharashtra, Goa & Daman
Gudi Padwa, with the gudi outside the home; festive foods include puran poli and shrikhand. Konkani communities call it Sausar Padvo.
Andhra Pradesh & Telangana
Ugadi, centred on Ugadi Pachadi and the almanac reading.
Karnataka
Yugadi, where the neem-jaggery mix is called bevu-bella.
Sindhi, Kashmiri & Manipuri communities
Marked as Cheti Chand (honouring Jhulelal, with worship of water), Navreh, and Sajibu Nongma Panba Cheiraoba respectively.

Most Hindu festivals are set by the lunar Hindu calendar (a specific Tithi within a specific lunar month), not the solar Gregorian calendar used internationally. Since a lunar year runs roughly 11 days shorter than a solar year, the same Tithi lands on a different Gregorian date each year — this is normal and expected, not an error.
