What is a Janma Kundali?

A Janma Kundali is a Vedic birth chart — a map of where each planet sat in the zodiac, and which of the 12 houses (bhavas) it fell in, at the exact moment and place you were born. It uses the sidereal (star-fixed) zodiac via the Lahiri ayanamsa, which is why it can place you in a different Moon sign or Ascendant than a Western tropical chart would.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between a Janma Kundali and a Western birth chart?

Both map planetary positions at your exact birth time and place, but they use different zodiacs: Vedic astrology (Janma Kundali) uses the sidereal zodiac, fixed to the actual stars via the Lahiri ayanamsa (the same ayanamsa this site uses), while Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, fixed to the seasons. The roughly 24° offset between the two is why your Vedic Moon sign or Ascendant can differ from your Western sun sign.

How important is an exact birth time for my Kundali?

Very important for the Ascendant (Lagna) and house positions — the Ascendant shifts roughly one sign every 2 hours, so even a 15–30 minute error can move planets into a neighbouring house and change which house-based predictions apply. Planetary sign positions themselves are far less sensitive to small time errors than the houses are.

Which house should I look at for career or marriage questions?

Career is primarily read from the 10th house (Karma Bhava) and its lord; marriage and partnerships from the 7th house (Kalatra Bhava). See the house table above for what each of the 12 houses governs.
